“The Best English Setter in the History of Dogdom”

We always knew he was special, from the minute we spotted him in the kennel in Springboro that late October Sunday just before his mom’s 40th birthday, until his last hours. Britain came to us as a timid, frightened puppy dirty from living on a farm. He quickly gained confidence and learned to take a walk, sit, roll over, and how to get whatever he wanted from his mom (and dad). He adapted well to his homes on Old French Road and Blossom Terrace, but especially loved roaming his estate on the shores of Lake Erie.
Britain’s jobs included security guard, hunter, bedwarmer, food tester, companion, personal trainer, comedian, athlete, and model. He excelled in all of his jobs and took them very seriously. Britain lived a long and healthy life, recovering well from his ACL surgery when he was 10 years old, and dealing with his seasonal bouts with skin allergies. He was valiant in his response to his nasal bleeding never letting it get in the way of his fun or duties.
Taking his English heritage seriously, Britain may have been described as aloof or standoffish by others. To us, he was the warmest and sweetest dog ever. His kisses can still be felt on our hands and feet, and when there were tears of sadness or angst. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Denise and Ed, his grandma, Martha, his aunts Michele and Connie, and many neighbors and their dogs. He will be with us as we gaze at the yard, toward the lake at the eternal lights, or watch the birds, or sit on the sofas, picturing his sleek body and feathers, imagining his soft fur, smile, and scent.
Britain had many friends, including Hokie, Lexie, Lydia, Mr. Groundhog, Mr. Skunk, Mr. Frog, and countless tadpoles and fish. Among his hobbies were boating, barking, sniffing, humping, parades, baseball, running, and being petted. The Little Guy (TLG) loved to travel to see his grandparents in Florida, and to stay in the best hotels in Toronto, Pittsburgh, Ontario, and other places both domestic and international. Although not particularly fond of baths, he liked to be brushed and was extremely photogenic, becoming the subject of a popular coffee table book and numerous photographs mounted in his residence, his mom’s office, photo albums, and on the internet where they could be viewed by his dad’s students and colleagues. He was honored as “Best Dressed at the Ballpark” in July 2008.
He will live on in our hearts forever as the best pet and friend. Britain will always be my buddy, angel dog, snuggle pup, “the little guy”, lovebug, sweet pea, and doll baby. We love and miss our puppy terribly, and although he will never be replaced, as a testament to his memory, we may make a place within our lives for another English setter.
May we find him again to walk and hug when he runs to meet us across the Rainbow Bridge.
