I was never allowed to have a dog as a child so I think I became quite attached to Millie because she was a sweet and loveable dog. Millie is not my dog but belonged to a colleague of mine who is originally from Britain. Since she was home alone most of the day, I decided to take her out on my day off. I remember going to his apartment to pick her up. I recall she did not come when I called out her name. I found her sitting at the head of the bed with a suspicious look. I sat on the bed and petted her, then jumped up and said "treat" at which time she became alive and jumped off the bed to follow me. I gave her Beggin Strips and that is how we became fast friends. I continued to take her on my days off and we had fun hanging out in my apartment, the beach, or the local park. She always got the attention of others when we played 'sticks' where I would throw a stick and she would run, barking loudly after it. She never fetched it, she would stand over it and bark at you to come get it and throw it again. She never tired of this! Even though she was older, her actions were those of a young dog.

Another memory was my first time taking care of her while her father went out of town. I stayed at his apartment so not to stress her out as we had just recently met. I fell asleep on the couch and I was awaken by a gently rubbing of her paw on my cheek. I woke up to this gentle stroke to find her looking at me and then turning her head towards the bedroom where she usually slept on the bed with her father. Another time, not having a lot of experience with dogs, I gave her half her food at the beginning of my dinner, thinking I would give the other half at the end of dinner. Before I could sit down, she nudged her bowl towards me and looked up with a longing look of more food! She was one smart dog!

During the last year of her life, her father sneaked her into work and 'hid' her in his office. Everyone knew except the director, or so we thought. I think he kindly looked away since she did not cause any trouble or barked.There were times we had to run her out into the car when there was an individual who may not appreciate a dog in the office. After the appointment, we would then take her out. She was always happy to see us even if it was only five minute separation.

Millie was always a patient and gentle dog. I am thankful for the short time I had with her and for her father for sharing her with me.
