Let me tell you a little story about an amazing dog named Rocky. He was born out of wedlock, his mother a purebred Golden Retriever and Daddy...well he was a one night stand that got over the 6 foot fence.
He was one of only two puppies to survive and was slated to be disposed of (mixed blood you know).
I assisted with the delivery; he is the little fellow they handed me during his mom’s emergency surgery. He was adorable from get go - all black with brindle on his face and all four legs with a little white spot on his chest.
When we were able to finally bring Rocky home, he was greeted by my older female dog that was not so pleased with the new addition. But after my female dog pooped in front of my bedroom door for a week, she decided to let him become part of the family.
Rocky was a typical youngster, chewing things up, tripping over his feet, stealing food left too close to the tables’ edge. One time he managed to climb up to a counter top and eat 2lbs of homemade fudge before anyone could stop him and when I yelled at him to stop; I scared him so much that he turned around and threw up making the biggest fudge puddle I have ever seen.
When Rock was only 3 years old I lost my female dog un-expectantly and this changed Rocky some, it took him about a year to mourn the loss of his friend. He would sleep where she slept; play with only her toys and to the end enjoyed her favorite game “chase the light”. Life threw him another curve a year later, I was in a serious motor vehicle accident and was in a trauma center for several weeks, once I came home Rocky never let me out of his sight.
After six months of rehabilitation I started to learn to walk again and without ever being taught, Rocky would come along side me to help me to support myself. As I advanced to taking stairs Rocky was right there taking the steps one at a time slowly and allowing me to lean on him.
Rocky and I had an amazing life together; most people who met us would swear Rocky could understand ever word I said to him. He also had an uncanny knack for sensing my moods, when I was sad, without a word Rocky would appear nudging my arm so he could lay his head on my lap and other times he would curl up on my feet and give me the most loving glance that would say “I’m here for you mom”. He was a strong, independent and caring friend who was always there for me.
Thank you Rocky for being one of the best friends a girl could have and 15 years of friendship!
