You are my Sunshine. My only Sunshine.

So glad I just stumbled upon this site. It's been four years since our Sunshine crossed and I think about her all the time. We have a new yellow lab and sometimes she gets called Sunshine. I think I sang every song to Sunshine that had the word in it. She was definitely my companion. My husband went off to work and the kids to school but Sunshine and I were buddies during the day. Even if she was curled up in the other room while I was doing chores it was comforting to know she was there.
We got Sunshine from a shelter so we didn't know how old she was. She had just come in and was out for a walk but we read her info and we just hit it lucky. Yes, we were the lucky ones. The second we laid eyes on her she stole our hearts. We took her to our vets and learned she was blind in one eye. Probably born that way they said. She was the first dog I had with my kids. We did soccer together, baseball together, swam together, etc. She was such a gentle spirit and we always said she was "human". We just told her what to do and she did it. Never needed training. The first time you said something she did it. She was amazing! After outside one day, she came in limping. We hoped it was nothing but the next day she still wasn't putting any weight on it. She had a titanium rod and screws put in that leg. Many months later and three days after she was off restrictions my daughter came home from college and Sunshine ran to her and hurt her other leg. Another titanium plate and screws. We used to joke and say we have the bionic dog.
When we had her for five years we were blessed to adopt. As our third child got older we learned he had special needs. Sunshine was amazing with him. She knew what he needed and when and also when not to bother him. At this point we estimated her to be around 7/8. So she instinctually had to have known this. We had many more very happy years with our girl until she took ill and you know the rest. Now we have a 2-1/2 yo yellow lab and Sunshine has to be whispering to her. Leia is great with our special needs son. And has not had any formal training. Sunshine will forever be a special part of my life. She died in my arms I hope knowing that and that I will see her again. 😢
