We adopted Buddy into the family back in 2001 from a nearby shelter. He was a year old and had been in the shelter for most of his life, after being adopted out and returned a few times. His loving chocolate eyes caught our attention and it was love at first sight. He was a little nervous at first; he wasn't used to living in a house. He slept in the bed straight between my parents and when the alarm went off in the morning he flew out of the bed. He got used to it fast though and was one of the greatest dogs ever. He had so much love to give, all those people that returned him should know what an amazing dog they gave up.
He was so friendly and gave you so much love. Whenever you looked at him, his ears would just perk up and he would look at you his tail pounding on the floor. He was a happy dog, despite having lived in a shelter for so long. He really enjoyed running around our backyard as fast as lightening. We have a big pool that he just ran circles around for hours. One time, he got out of our backyard on accident and didn't even leave the property, he stood at the edge of the driveway and luckily, he just sat there.
He loved to take walks but didn't like to go far; there was a line that he would never walk past and he insisted that you only walk him the same way every walk. He didn't like change and refused to walk in a different direction, but that was just fine, we enjoyed our walks together anyway.
He got along with everyone and everything. He couldn't harm a fly. He once came in with a tiny bird craddled in his mouth, holding it very gently so he didn't harm it at all. It had fallen out of a nest in the backyard.
We had Buddy for four years before Buddy found someone to add to the family. He was barking and whining at the shed in the backyard peaking through the door. Buddy had been crying at a tiny little kitten laying on the cold damp floor. If Buddy hadn't been crying and made us look into the garage that little cat would have died. The kitten, named Baby Cat, was the first of many cats to make their way into our home. Buddy welcomed them all and got along so well with them. He was such a great dog.
Buddy was a fan of sports. Whenever baseball or hockey was on tv, he would sit and watch it with us and bark at the tv. He was so attentive to the television. Wheneve he heard a dog or an animal noise on tv his ears perked up and he stared at the tv and sometimes barked. it was so cute.
Buddy would look out the front window wagging his tail as he watched us walk up the driveway. He always greeted us excitedly and lovingly with so much affection.
When Buddy started getting sick, it was really a hard time. It was so sad to see him look so sad and just laid around on his bed. We took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with addison's disease. He was treated for addison's but just didn't get any better. He was slowly worsening; we could just see it in his eyes. They were sunken in and he looked frail and thin.
One night, he couldn't get up the stairs, he was so weak. He laid on his bed and in the morning he couldn't even get up. We took him to the vet yet again and he was diagnosed with cancer. A heartbreaking result.
Sadly, Buddy passed away peacefully on the morning of January 16 in the arms of my loving mother who comforted him in his final seconds. One of the saddest moments of my life was the loss of my BuddyBoy. He was such a big part of my life and he wasn't just a pet: he was a part of my family and will be forever missed and loved.
