THANE OF COLUMBIA
[as told to to Daddy Scott]
First of all, let me make it clear, in my unmistakeable *cantankerous* way that I don't go for any of this 'Heaven' stuff, even though I am somehow very much with my two Dads all of the time since I 'went away'. I didn't just die, I 'went away' [more of that, anon]
That being said ........................ here goes:
I AM BORN..... but wait, at this exciting juncture I must interrupt myself [as I will throughout this mighty tome] to say that I had thought of opening this history with 'Call Me Ishmael', but decided that Dickens is more of a lantzman than Melville.
So.... I AM BORN .......... but hold on, I must jump ahead to the most intense and saddest memory of my youth; that being the celebration of my birth on the second night {in doggie years} of my life, evil night that it turned out to be, as ye who read shall soon see.
It was a dark and stormy night [!] and within the Great Kennel of Cairn Hall, on the isle of Skye [go Scotland!], my ancestral home, the torches flamed and cast their shadows on the scene below. The celebration of my birth was at its bacchanalian peak. The food was flowing and the meade was plentiful. Merriment and lust and song filled the room. However, all eyes were drawn to the center of the great space. It was there, on top of the bar, that a woman holding a tambouriine with her left front paw, danced with wild abandon, with [somewhat ragged] ribbons of many colors that adorned her body, flying in all directions. She was me mum. {And here I will pause to recount my most noble ancestry}.
I can trace my bloodline back to McAdam and through the centuries to McMichaelangelo, to McBach, McShakespeare and the like. But back to me mum.. Oh she was so beautiful and that night as always the meny canine men gathered round the bar, reaching for her, grabbing her ragged ribbons and when possible giving a lick to her teats. {al of the men who came to Skye semed to love her milk]. It is of note to recall that me Mum's talent was known far and wide o'er the hghland and the very lowlands of Scotland. Over her years, the word of her fame had spread and how worth the while it was to travel to Cairn Hall on the isle of Skye to see her and do the 'hoe-down' I am not sure what they meant by that since me Mum's dance specialty was the schottische . Be that as it may on and on she danced through the night with frequent backroom breaks, always escorted by a gent.Oh, me Mum was spectacular.!
As for me Dad..............................they say that he was a 'travelling man'.
At the height of the revelry, I dozed off thinking of my first two days at Cairn Hall. It had been a grand time, but oh, such a rigid schedule
