RIP my dearest Luckypuppy, you taught me the meaning of unconditional love.

One night in the Spring of 1996, there was a knock at the door and a lady on the other side held the leach of the cutest little 3-month old black Lab. She asked our family to keep him until she could find him a home. She had tried to place him before but hadn't worked out and her dogs were too jealous of him for her to keep. She assured us she would place posters all over the neighborhood in an effort to find the owners.

Less than a week later, when coming home from work and seeing him run toward me, I asked my mom to call the lady and ask her to remove the posters. I wanted to keep him.

The rest is a myriad of wonderful memories. He had a rambunctious personality and was happy-go-lucky. Our family was the center of his universe. He and I always shared a special bond.

I tried calling him several names, and Lucky was the only one he responded to, so we named him Lucky. Later, I would often call him Luckypuppy.

After making him part of the family, I realized he certainly brought out the best in me. He was unconditional love impersonated. And I responded accordingly. One night when he slept in my room (well I slept, he was up to no good), I heard a sound only to find out he was ripping to pieces an outfit I had just bought, labels still on. I was amazed at my reaction. I just couldn't get mad at him. I scolded him, of course, and removed the shreds from his mouth, but hitting him was out of the question. We were not good at disciplining him. He always did whatever he wanted. I'm not saying this is good; it just is. We'd never had pets before and spoiling is what my family does best.

As the years rolled, he would always get a piece of cake when there was a birthday, and Thanksgiving dinner too.

Sadly, this week on 2/21/2011 we had to put him down, at the age of 15, due to numerous health issues, among which were being totally paralyzed (all 4 legs) and incontinent. He had pressure wounds and a generalized infection. It was extremely hard for the family to make that decision. We had put it off while he could still walk with the aid of pain killers. We love him dearly & will never forget him. It comforts me to know that he had a great life. He was the king of the backyard. He certainly taught me the meaning of unconditional love and inspired the love & respect I feel for all animals today. RIP my dearest Lucky Puppy.
