Nickname: Casey Cusimano, Bub

When my wife and I bought our first house, I wanted a dog. My wife, a cat person, was a bit reluctant at first but we made it a project together to visit local shelters to find just the right rescue dog who happened to like cats. We didn't want a puppy, and we started looking at no-kill shelters thinking that they would tend to have readily adoptable dogs without behavior problems. However, most of the dogs in the no-kill shelters in our area were puppies. We made one last trip to a shelter in Lynn, MA and they had only a few dogs, mostly small, and many puppies.

In one cage, curled up in a little ball, looking up at us as with the most beautiful brown canine eyes, was a dog named "Joey" according to the sign which also indicated he was a Keeshond/Shepherd mix. Not exactly what I imagined for my dog, but he was four years old, wasn't too big (about 40 lbs) and looked calm and lovable. We asked to take him for a walk and he clearly was intelligent and energetic, and seemed to love playing with a tennis ball. We asked to test him around cats and that went well too. So that's how the dog we eventually would name Casey picked us to be his best friend, playmate, and trusty assorted food supplier.
