You filled up my life with your beautiful canine body. Lilly and I love you and miss you already.

Alice, I would have given anything for you when I saw you as a tiny puppy, but I was blessed to recieve you for free, along with your beautiful sister Lilly. It had been many years since there was a dog around, and now there were two, brimming with energy, love, play, and puppy wrinkles. I remember looking forward to the both of you growing old in such a good home with all the deer to bark at, many cars to chase but never to catch, and endless affection and assorted treats for you to beg for. Watching you toddle around with your unproportionate head-to-body-ratio was the greatest and funniest thing. I definately experienced some maternal connection to the both of you and promised myself that I would look out for you no matter what. You were my little butterflies. The puppy visits to the vet were new because that had never really been done before with my first dog. You were in good health and had all of your shots over the next months. The puppy fat and wrinkles melted away slowly and were replaced by sleek, well muscled, 40+ pound dogs. I don't know how many times I stared out the window at you while you ran towards the road after a vanishing car. That worried me, although you never seemed to get too close. There was also chicken-chasing, and shoe/rug/lawn chair chewing, cat terrorizing, and sloppy kisses, gobbled food, endlessly rubbed bellies and wagging tails. All the very best things. I had been away before, only for a few days, and then againi other family members were always around. I got the call from my sister. She said that you had been hit by a car, Alice, and that you didn't make it. I cried. You were one very important half of the dynamic duo of Alice and Lilly. You were a team, always looking after each other. And then I thought of Lilly, alone now. She must be confused and lonely, wondering where her best friend was. As soon as I could get home I got out of the car and Lilly walked over to me. I instinctively looked around for you, waiting for the both of you to greet me. You didn't come, but I should have expected that. I picked your sister up and began crying all over again. There was no way around it. She leaned into me and I held on. The yard was strangely quiet. We sat out on the grass together and I took in all the peices left of you two, how much she had grown, just like you, how you resembled her, but your clear differences. I sang "If I die Young", just because it popped into my head and it felt right. I could tell that she was listening , she was listening for you, too. I extracted myself and took Lilly into the porch with me. I gathered up the framed pictures of you two and I am currently carrying them around the house with me, setting them up wherever I am so that I can see you and Lilly together, like it should be. Even though you are gone, I still feel you here, expecting you to bound around the corner with your sister. I promised Lilly that we will do everything, and we will share that with you too, in our hearts. I promised that Lilly and I would learn to play fetch, my most recent goal for the both of you. I will love Lilly the same, (I had so much love for both of you), and definately more now that you aren't hear with us anymore. We love you so much. I think about you always and it hasn't even been that long but I miss you already. Alice, you and Lilly were and still are perfect to me. You filled up my life with everything that I could have wanted, and that is the truth. You are an angel, me and Lilly's Angel. I love you, dear girl. Love forever and ever, Maddy and Lilly.
