I came home to Fountain Valley in order to escape a violent relationship, and had no idea that life would ever me good again. And then here was this puppy, a ball of love, pure and simple. He was happiest at his park when I threw balls with his red Chuck-it, and praised him as if he was providing me with a service only he could perform. How true this turned out to be.
He saved my life, because Sammy taught me what it is to love - for real - and that love is a genuine give and take agreement between two beings. I'll never accept anything less, and the only gift I could give him besides my undying and unconditional love was the ability to not let him suffer from his brain cancer. He never suffered and he died in my arms, hearing my voice, with his balls and his squeaky stuffed lemur by his side.
Sam was more than a dog; he was a healer sent to me from above to show me that I am worthy of love and life. He taught me that giving love is the most wonderful thing a human being can do, and I feel I can go out into the world again. With love in my heart.
