My boyfriend and I got Chewy when we first moved in our apartment together in 2008. With only $140.00 to our names and no sense of what a budget was, we decided to drive to Livermore to just "look" at a breed I had been looking at called chiweenies ( half chihuahua half dachshund ). When we got to the breeders home, one puppy caught my eye. It was the only long haired puppy within the litter. It was then that we decided we had to bring him home. We paid $100 for him and with the $40 we had to survive on for the next week, we used to buy him dog shampoo,food, a leash and a toy. (thanks to the family for throwing us a couple bucks to help until our next paycheck) On the drive home we tried to figure out a name for him. I remembered when first picking him up, he nibbled on my hand and the name hit me: Chewy. He definitely lived up to his name. Every time we came home i would find shoes, tv, phone & internet cords, tissue, clothes and furniture chewed up. Even though he was a handful, he was full of love and affection and had his own personality. He was SUCH a picky eater. He would only eat food that was warmed up and on a plate. He knew what was 'dog' food and what was human food and can even tell if a part of food had sauce on it and eat around it. He never backed down from fighting bigger dogs, play with the neighborhood kids passing by and just be there to make people smile. Even though he was tiny, he had a huge heart. He took my boyfriend and I from just being a couple and made us into a family.

On July 1st 2011, Chewy started showing signs of being sick. He was quiet and lethargic and wouldn't play or respond to his name. Since it was 1 am there was nothing much we could do except wait until the vet opened. Long and I barely got any sleep because we kept checking to see if he was ok.When we finally got to the vet, they said that they suspected him of having rat poison in his system. wtf? We had no rat poison in or around the house. The vet prescribed vitamin k shots and to take vit k pills for the next few weeks since the poison was causing his blood not to coagulate. He received his shots and we went home. He got progressively worse over the next few hours. He started to whimper every time he took a breath and was becoming dehydrated. Every time he would drink water he would vomit blood and water a few moments later. I gave him pedialyte to help regain some fluids in his body but it he just couldn't hold it down. That night he seemed restless. He would come and lay next to me but a few moments later get up to vomit again. He was becoming weak and could barely take any steps. I could see he was tired as he kept closing his eyes as to doze off but he kept fighting it. I brought him to the vet again the next morning to pick up the vit k pills and to have the vets check on him again. After taking his temp they discovered blood coming from his anus. The vet suggested ( with the help of this other money hungry ASS in the room who kept saying we had to go over a plan and costs and kept cutting off the vet from telling me when i asked what can i do to care for him) running more tests, referring me to a specialist and even blood transfusions. I knew right then and there that Chewy was going to die. All this mumbo jumbo about running tests, transfusions and specialists was bullshit. I knew that the poison had already manifested in his body and at this point no blood transfusion would help. And if there was any chance that it would, with my boyfriend and I having little savings we could never afford it. I paid for the pills hoping and praying that some miracle would come. A couple of hours later, Chewy was getting weaker. He was taking few steps before falling to the ground. He couldn't even pick up his head when trying to drink water.I then noticed a little blood around his anus. I tried to wash it off and wrap him in a towel. Then I felt a gush of blood on my clothes. Chewy was bleeding profusely.I bundled him up with two towels and tried to rush him back to the vet. I had my boyfriend on speaker screaming and crying while holding Chewy in one hand and driving with the other. I felt helpless looking at Chewy struggling until the moment he passed. I pulled over and cried non stop. In less than 24 hours of finding out he was poisoned, he died.

I know those are gruesome and heartbreaking details but I wanted to let people know how it happened. I don't know if its just us, but we have a STRONG feeling someone poisoned him on purpose. Being that with 2 other dogs in the house and Chewy being such a picky eater, how could he have "accidentally" eaten it without any other dogs being affected? NO other dogs ( owned or homeless ) that roam around the neighborhood show signs of being sick. how is it possible that only Chewy got poisoned? I just hope karma comes back a million times harder to whoever did it. Its not just the fact he died, but the WAY he died was unnecessary and cruel.
