The Story Of Theo

I remember it like it was yesterday,I told my husband, Jim that I wanted a little house dog. He went to the animal shelter and called me, he said there was a little red Pomeranian there that was just picked up by animal control. He said that he knelt down to his cage and this little red-haired puff ball came up to him and looked him right in the eyes with the most loving look he had ever seen. Jim was smitten! I told him I wanted him. So he made the arrangements and we were to pick him up from the vet the next day. That night we lay in bed and thought of names for him, Jim said how about Theo, and that just seemed to fit. The next day before we picked him up we spent the day buying toys, a leash, food and water bowls, etc. I waited in the car while Jim went into pick him up from the vet and when he carried him out and put him in my lap, I melted. That face looked at me so adoringly and those eyes pierced my soul. I knew right then and there that our little family would forever be changed by the love of a little red-haired dog named Theo.

That was 15 years ago and every single day of those 15 years that little angel brought us so much joy and laughter. Every morning he would crawl up onto my chest and wrap his little paws around my neck and push his face into mine, he was actually hugging me good morning. Who would not have a good day if their day started out like that each time? Theo was always there during good times and bad, he seemed to always sense if there was something wrong and would crawl into our laps and look at us with those innocent brown eyes and say “it is going to be ok”. I recently went through an illness that kept me from work for 7 months, every day of those 7 months my Theo laid by my side, comforted me when I was sad, made me laugh when I did not feel like laughing, he lifted my spirits like only an angel could do. I thank God for these last 7 months I got to spend with him every day. My Mom said that he pulled me through my illness and now that I was healthy and ok he figured he had done his job and he was ready to go home to RainbowBridge where his little old body would be restored and he would have no pain and he will play with all the other animal angels.

Our lives will never be the same with out him. It seems like everything we did, we did with Theo. I hope he knows how much we love him still and miss him and find peace only in knowing that one day we will all three be united again. We love you Theo

Painting a Pet Canvas

When we adopted you into our life our pet canvas was blank. With every lick of your tongue a portion of the canvas was cleared revealing part of a picture underneath. At first I thought it was strange. Instead of painting new memories you seemed to be unveiling a picture already there. But what was it of? I would understand later. As each wonderful year passed, our love for one another grew deeper. Every time we'd play, or go for a walk, or cuddle, more of the picture would be revealed.

When you grew old I started to see a pair of hands on the canvas. I assumed it was our hands petting you but I couldn't make out the rest of it because it was still fuzzy. We knew you were nearing the end and we loved you all the more. We prayed that God would take you in your sleep so we wouldn't have to make that awful decision. But He didn't and I was angry. I asked Him why would He put us in this situation? A soft voice answered, "If you truly love your pet it will all become clear".

When you became too weak and frail to finish the picture I knew it was time to put you to sleep. With all of the courage that God could give me I took you to the veterinarian. As I held you when you passed away my heart broke and rivers of tears streamed down my face. Then I heard His voice, "Look at the picture now". I did and it was crystal clear. He then said, "A pet canvas can only be completed with tears of compassion".

The picture wasn't of our hands petting you; they were God's hands holding all three of us.
