Nickname: Sydd, Bubba

In loving memory of my beloved best friend and companion for 14 years.
Sydd, aka Bubba, was my first dog. He was just ten weeks old when I first met him, and I fell in love with him instantly.

For his first few years he went to work with me every day, where he became the recreation director. Everyone spent their breaks playing with him. His favorite time was playing ball in a long hall that was blocked off just for that purpose. In quieter times at the office, he sat in the window and just watched outside. When he was feeling more rambunctious, he ate his bed and like to shred paper. On one occasion, I accidentally left a new roll of paper towels on the desk. When I returned to the office a few minutes later, the entire floor was a sea of shredded paper towels. He looked so happy.

As a puppy, Sydney loved socks (especially the ones I was trying to put on), his tennis ball and his stuffed gorilla that he liked to hump. He loved to go riding in the car and bark at every cow and horse he saw. He took great pride in his ability to gut his stuffed toys within ten minutes of getting a new one. He liked diving for carrots in the wading pool in summer. He would stick his head into the water and blow bubbles as he searched the bottom of the pool for a carrot. I learned the hard way, when he mistook my toe for a carrot, that his underwater vision wasn't so good.

Sydney was a typical terrier, almost cat-like in attitude. Sometimes when I would call him to come to me, he would run right over for the butt rub he knew was coming. Other times, he would just sit and look at me as if to say “You talking to me?”. Of course, that independent spirit is exactly what I loved about him.

As he got older, he liked to spend afternoons napping in the sun as it came in through the window, always moving as the sun moved across the room. When not napping, he sat in the window and just watched. He often adopted this very pensive pose. Sydney loved everyone he met and always made sure to show them his affection. I loved winters with him because he often cuddled up beside me for long naps. Those quiet times together will truly be missed.

In his senior years, Sydd had several serious health issues, but he always bounced back. Arthritis began to set in, as well, but he was a trooper and never complained. When diagnosed with a heart valve defect and congestive heart failure at the age of twelve, he was expected to live only a few months to a year, but once again, he showed everyone just how resilient he was and made it over two years before he passed from an unrelated condition.

Sydney brought joy to my life every single day. Having him in my life made me a better person. He will be deeply missed. I will love him forever, and I know his spirit will walk beside me always.
