Baylee was abused and abandoned when she was 4 months old. I worked for a construction company that was putting a new foundation under a house and she was sleeping on the front porch in the snow. I didn't know anything about dogs, but Baylee taught me what I needed to know. We walked every day for years in the woods or by the river and had many adventures.
Baylee had an incredible passion for the things she loved; she would find a stick and roll around on the ground pretending it was a wild animal she was fighting. I taught her to catch a Frisbee and she loved to ride with me in the truck. One day I got a cheap drum set from my neighbor and from the first time she heard them, she was hooked. Baylee loved to bark along as I played the drums; running back and forth and jumping in pure joy.
We jammed the night she died and it was the most inspired we have ever played. She had been sick, but was taking her medication and seemed to be getting better. She had been outside for awhile and then went downstairs, but when I checked on her later on, she was dying. She suffered, but only a little while as I held her. It was 4 am and there was no place to take her.
I couldn't save all the homeless dogs, but I saved Baylee; and the wonderful memories I have are worth the awful pain I am feeling now. She was a good girl and a great friend.
