Pepper joined our family in August 2000. While we know little to nothing of her life before, the vet told us she was about two years old and from her behavior, we knew that life and people had not been kind to her.
Being a member of our family changed that and with our love and care, she quickly blossomed into a faithful dog who enjoyed going for long walks and being petted and cuddled. She had a few rough patches in the beginning, stealing sandwiches and knocking over the hamster cage, but she quickly realized this was a safe haven and accepted all of us as her family.
Pepper was never much for toys - although she was given tennis balls and stuffed animals, she showed little interest in them, preferring instead to run around the yard and going for her walks. She was full of energy and could go for three two-mile walks a day sometimes! As time went on, she was joined in these walks by her buddies Marla (who went before her) and Lulu (who moved away before Pepper's passing).
Although Pepper got older and the fur around her muzzle became white, she never slowed down until she was close to her final journey. When she couldn't go for her full walks anymore, and the vet confirmed she had cancer, we knew her time had come.
On June 11, 2012, she was delivered from the pains of this life. Surrounded by people who loved her, she slipped away to a place where she will never feel hurt or sorrow again.
Although Pepper could not speak, I believe if she could, she would want people to know there are many dogs out there who need loving homes. Yes, everyone wants the cute pure-bred puppy or the expensive designer dog, but there are puppies and dogs in shelters all across the country in need of families to care for them. If you are seeking for a pet to join you in life, why not look in these places and save an animal who might otherwise meet their fate far sooner than they should? Why not show kindness and compassion to a pet who has only ever known cruelty? I know Pepper was thankful she was saved and we know until the day she left that she never forgot the way she was treated early on...but she also never forgot the people who loved her and gave her a wonderful home and a place in the family.
Pepper taught us that it doesn't matter that they walk on four legs or drool or can't speak - pets truly are family and while their deaths bring sadness, they are never gone as there is always a place for them in our hearts.
