Possum came to us with her sister, Fox, as a rescue from a puppy mill. It took her two years to even wag her tail. It took her a long time to build trust in us, too. When she finally did, she was the most loving, sensitive, caring dog ever. She loved her sister dearly and took excellent care of Fox. Possum was shy, but very loving to us and quite protective. She enjoyed the snow immensely and loved the outdoors. Possum was a born herder and finally got her goats to herd during this final year of her life. She did love to steal and eat Kleenex, and when she was younger, she'd sometimes took her sister's Nylabone and chewies, too, but she always let her have them back. She never really played with toys, but when we'd come home after being gone awhile, she'd pick up her "toy" (a string fabric chew toy) or sock and prance around with it to show us she was glad we were home. Possum would slap the bed with her paws and "buff" - jerking her head from side to side when she wanted our attention or a drink (because the bed was too high for her to jump off). She loved playing under the covers, and she'd crawl up to us and scrunch her face back and forth underneath one of us while we scratched her up and down her body. I miss her so much - it feels like my heart is permanently broken. I've had and loved many dogs in my long life, but none have compared to Possum. I loved her like my child. She taught me so much about trust and faith and letting go. In her shyness, she had a quiet dignity. We still have Fox, and I will do my best to honor Possum by taking extra care of her sister. I adore Fox as well. Fox seems to know that her sister will always be with us. As awesome and perfect as Possum was, I can't imagine it any other way. I know I'll see her again some day.
