Ebony was an AKC registered Black Chow Chow. She was born in Lawton, Oklahoma. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. She and I hit it off immediately and made a great companion and family member. She traveled everywhere with me by air or car. We lived a few years in Germany as a military family and she was with us. I remember taking her for walks everyday and she loved it. She was included in most family affairs.
I remember when I was 8 months pregnant, she got out of the house. We were staying with my parents who lived near some cows. Ebony went up that hill and tried to chase the cows, then collapsed in the middle of the hill. I had to rescue her and get her down off that hill. She was totally exhausted.
At age 14 in August of 1999, I noticed Ebony had a lump in her jaw so I took her to the vet where they biopsied it. I later got the news that it was metastatic carcinoma. The vet thought that it could be removed, so 2 weeks later they did surgery on her. I thought everything was going to be OK, but the vet found that the carcinoma had spread throughout her body and it was impossible to get it all. They had to remove most of her jaw and so her quality of life would not be good. She survived the surgery but passed away quietly the night of surgery. They called me the next morning and said that she had passed away. I went down to the vet and they had her prepared so that I could say good-bye. I never really got over her loss. I only have learned to live with it.
