My Companion, My Angel, My Little “Pitter Pat”

Nickname: Pitter Pat, Sugar Foot, Sister, Baby Girl

Mya will forever be the love of my life. God sent her to me when He knew I needed her the most and even though she was considered a “rescue”, she was the one that rescued me. For the past 6 years she has been my companion, but really more like my little girl. It is really odd when I have to remind myself that she was a dog – because when I would look at her or think of her, all I saw was my little girl. We would share everything and do everything together. No matter if it was laundry, watching TV, or cooking – she was my little shadow, and I could always hear the pitter pat of her feet following me every step. I would talk to her the entire time and have full conversations with her, just knowing she understood everything I was saying.

Canine brother “Max” was the best big brother she could have ever asked for and they loved each other so much. These coming days I think will be the hardest on him, as he sits by the window waiting for her to come home. I have tried explaining to him that sister is no longer in pain or sick and is just waiting for the day that we are all together again. I just wish there was a way I could make him understand and comfort him more.

From the time of her cancer diagnosis and her surgery – things in our life changed so fast…to where every second of every day mattered and meant so much more. I would kiss her and love on her and tell her how much I loved her to the point I think I wore her out. She tried to continue to play and interact as much as she could until the pain really started to set in and it was at that time my heart started to break, because I knew what was to follow soon. Never have I felt so helpless in my life. We were so lucky to have the best doctor and nurses – which we would get to see about every week. They loved her so much and gave her the best care I could have ever asked for or expected. She would get so excited when I would tell her we were going to the doctor. Monday morning at the doctor, when my little angel took her last breath, I think everything stopped at the doctor’s office. I recall one moment when I looked up and I could see the tears coming down their faces, and how still everyone was. I cannot get the images of that day out of my head, I have tried replacing them with the happy memories we have, but all I can do is think about giving her just more kiss, one more hug and whispering one more time into her ear “momma loves you so much and I am right here”

It has been 2 days without her and I feel completely lost. I miss kissing her in the morning when I wake up, feeling her snuggled up against my back when we would sleep, blow drying our hair in the morning, sitting outside and listening to her yell at the neighboring dogs, playing toys, seeing her waiting at the dining room window as I would pull into the driveway coming home from work – I guess I miss just about everything I would normally do, since she was always part of it. My heart is broken
