When my parents built a new house they said they didn't want a messy dog. That lasted about 2 months. My folks ran out the day before we were supposed to get Max and brought him home. Max kept them up all night so my dad came downstairs early with Max under his arm, all of 10 pounds or so. He grew to about 100 pounds.
He was the runt of the litter because every time they let him out he would explore while his siblings ate. He was fed separately because of it. He always explored new places, as soon as he was set loose he took off exploring, the funniest one was saying hi to a little old lady at my grandma's nursing home; she was surprised, but thrilled!
He caused a grand total of $10 in damage, a miracle in our eyes for a puppy. He never once growled in anger. He knew how to open the doors in our house, but was too polite to open them unless he really had to go at 3 AM.
While nice to all humans, small animals were fair game, he was a good jumper, he actually caught several birds. He also loved frisbees and could snag one out of the air 6 or 7 feet up.
When he was older and we had to give him pills in peanut butter. He hated peanut butter, so he disappeared when we opened the peanut butter jar. We resorted to putting the pill in the filling of an Oreo. He would come when we opened the cookie drawer, one of the few things he could hear when he was older.
Max's greatest feat was helping cure the fear of large dogs in several friends. He was the only big dog they liked.
Several neighborhood girls would come by and ask to take him for a walk which he was happy to oblige. All of my friends adored him. He pranced when we walked him and we got a steady stream of "what a great looking dog" comments.
The day that he died was the toughest in my life so far, I hope dogs do indeed go to heaven!
