Steeler -
I know you are up in heaven now, and happy as we remember you to be. You were such a great dog. Jess and I had no idea of what we were getting into when we got you. We were there in this room, with all of these fat little black and tan puppies. Every one of those puppies was chewing on things, acting obnoxious, and getting into everything. But then we saw you, and you were just looking for a quiet place to nap and be away from all of the commotion. We fell in love with you right that second, and took you home that night.
Ill never forget, we were hungry and stopped at a McDonalds and got some Chicken McNuggets. We didn't even have puppy food for you yet. We tried to feed you half of a chicken nugget and you wouldn't eat it. In a few months, our hands would become covered with your slobber if we offered you anything, and you ate more than a few chicken nuggets in your day.
You were named after my favorite football team. The name came to us when we wrapped you in a little Steeler blanket we had. I'd like to think your good luck took us to three SuperBowls - and we won two of them!! But really, Steeler was the best name because you "Stole" our hearts.
You drove me crazy as a puppy. You ate three sofas, multiple phones, and shut our trucking business down when you ate the phone and fax lines one day. You always had a knack for getting into trouble as a puppy, but your Momma - Jess - always tried to teach you the right way. She would take you on runs, and you would tire out and she would have to carry you. You never liked getting into the car, and you were so heavy that we would have to try to carry you and get you inside.
We got you a brother - Gus - and you seemed to pass all of your sillyness to him. Then, you just became the rock of our family. He was always the one getting into trouble, and you were the good boy. You never ran away. You always barked if you heard a weird sound, and like cryptonite to Superman, the only thing that could drain your powers was the sight of SpongeBob Squarepants. You were so afraid of that cartoon.
I could sit here and write stories forever about what it was like to be your dad and I was so proud to have you as my dog. I still am. I am sorry we didn't get to do more. I feel like we should. And I am so happy you were a part of our lives. When we got you, Jess and I became a family. You were our wedding ring, before we were married. Once we had you, we knew that we were going to be together for a long, long time.
Gus misses you, and Bang-Bang keeps lying on the spot where you used to sleep on the couch. I miss waking up and having you there. It is so quiet now that you are not here. I look at our door to the back yard, and I miss your big smiling face - wanting to come inside to lay at our feet.
Steeler, if the angels can read this message to you in a language you can understand, I hope they can tell you that I love you with all of my heart, and I miss you more than you know. I am so happy that I watched you close your eyes, and had my hands on your beautiful face when you went to be in heaven. There will never be another doggy like you. You were the best friend a person could ever have. There is a hole in my heart now that you are gone, and I just wish I could have had some more time with you.
Someday, when I die, I pray that when I walk through heavens gates, a big drooling Rottweiler in the prime of his life comes bounding towards me, smiling that big goofy grin that you wore your whole life. Then, I will know for sure that I made it to heaven. Until that day comes, just know that I love you, and you will always be one of the most beautiful memories of my life. Thank you for being our family dog for eleven and a half years on earth, and for the lifetime you will live in our hearts.
Steeler - We Love You!! You are the best dog in the whole wide world, and your memory will always bring laughter and light into our lives. God bless old friend. Sweet dreams baby boy.
