We were getting ready to go to San Diego the next day- when I saw an ad for a puppy- so off we went. We got to this ranch and the older man had mama & papa rotts and there were puppy's, with all living outside. Here in Phoenix - that can be a challenge. My husband and I were each holding one - when I saw flash go by and one of the puppy's was running into the irrigation ditch, when I asked the man about that one. He said "you don't want that one". I went by the puppy- and when i picked her up- she threw her head back and got stiff as a board. To find out later - that is a reaction when they have not had any human contact. The man wanted $20 and as we took her- he just shook his head.
We had to work with her for about three months before she was happy to be held. She was the easiest puppy: no chewing, potty trained easy & generally would listen. She had her first surgery (TPLO) before her first birthday and while recovering from that one she had to have a TPLO on the other leg. She did excellent - recovered and was an absolute awesome dog. The day after we got her- we left for San Diego and she went on her first camping trip and she loved every time we went - no matter the location.
Sweetpea's best friend is Snickers (rott/shepard), who wasn't too thrilled at first to have a 5 week puppy running around his feet- but they grew to be bestie's. After Sweetpea passed- Snickers sat in front of her urn for over a month:( It is kinda strange because after she passed and we were looking for pictures of Sweetpea - we found that we had taken so many more, than any of our dogs, as if we knew something was going to happen before it did.
So Snickers (we had done a hip replacement) was getting older and Sweetpea wanted to play, so off to rescue another one. We rescued a cane corso - named her Daisy and once again Snickers was not too thrilled and actually neither was Sweetpea. Then Sweetpea and Daisy learned to play together- and bout a month later Sweetpea began to limp on her left leg. Off to the vet and meds ordered. Didn't work- different meds, still didn't work- x-rays. It was determined that her previous surgery, under the hardware was an infection in her bone. More meds, surgery to remove the hardware and I asked for a bone biopsy. Results came back osteosarcoma and we were heartbroken.
She was diagnosed on June 1, 2012, we amputated on June 15th and she recovered so quickly!!!! She had no mets, but we were told it was aggressive. We decided on the natural route, along with supplements and we were told we had 6 months - year. Sweetpea passed on September 2, 2012. We rescued her on 05/23/06 and she rescued us till her last breath on 09/02/12!!!! We love and miss you so much and not a day goes by, that we don't think about you:)
