I swore when I adopted Roscoe that I would never let another dog get too close to my heart. We had lost three in four years and my heart had been through enough. We had just lost Casey three weeks before adopting Roscoe. Our remaining basset, Clarabelle, hated being alone and was beside herself. We knew we had to adopt a friend for her and she was thrilled to have Roscoe join the family.
Roscoe went out of his way to ingratiate himself to me. He followed me everywhere, sat with me on the couch, and looked at me with an expression that said "Are you God?". I was hooked.
For the next 12 years, he showed his big, cantankerous personality. He would bury his toys in the fall and dig them up in the spring. We started calling fall "burying season" and spring "harvesting season". After six months under ground his "treasures" were pretty disgusting and naturally, they all came in the house. He made himself right at home on the patio furniture and on the couch. He could be flatulent. He was stubborn as hell. He could pretend to be deaf. When he first came home, we thought he WAS deaf. I loved him to death and so did Clarabelle.
We lost Clarabelle in May 2016. She was 15 and had been dealing with CHF for about a year. She died peacefully in the yard. Roscoe was beside himself. He grieved for months and just as he was coming out of his grief, he started passing blood in his urine. At first the vet thought he had an infection, but when it didn't clear up, he was sent to a specialist for an ultrasound. They found a large mass in his bladder. We said our last goodbye on January 26.
I've never loved a dog like I loved Roscoe. We've adopted two more dogs, but no dog will ever take Roscoe's place in my heart.
Fly free baby boy!! Mama loves and misses you more than you'll know.
