You were with us 15 years and now you've left a big void. We miss you terribly.

Nickname: Little Bear

We found Milo on Christmas Day 1995 just sitting on a grassy patch in front of my friends complex in Torrance, CA. My friend Florence then called the animal cops and they book'd him. Thanks to her, she followed up with the shelter weeks later and got him out. No one had wanted him. She was unable to have dogs where she lived so Milo came to live with us. Within the first month we got him, I cam home to find him missing. I checked all the doors, gates and possible exits. Then I saw that our second story window screen was gone. Milo had jumped out the window, onto the cement driveway and was gone. My brother Raj then scoured the neighborhood and found him running around chasing cats. He didn't have even a broken bone or scratch on him. The first time we took him to Huntington Beach Dog Beach he took off after a butterfly, heading straight for traffic on PCH. Later that year, we got a Pomeranian named Chim-chim. She completed our four-some Wahl pack. The pack then made weekly trips to the beach, dog parks, hikes and outdoor dining spots. His favorite vacation spots were Fort Funston and Crissy Field in San Francisco and Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in San Diego. He loved the rain, the cold and the snow. We think his ancestors are from somewhere cold as I saw a photo of his twin in an old National Geographic photo with some Eskimos. He preferred to sleep outside, on the cold cement, even if it was 4AM on the coldest nights. He wasn't an angel though and had long rap sheet. He had a thing for skunks and this amazing immunity from skunk spray. He took his spa treatments in the form of dead, decaying washed up beach critters.. He would roll in it so that every piece of his thick fur was covered in green smelly decaying slime. He loved to eat and could inhale a big bowl of food in 3 seconds flat without bothering to chew. His favorite delicacy was the mailman. He was sentenced to home confinement and probation after tasting one. We paid the hefty fine and the mailman survived. As Milo got older, he became blind in both eyes despite many trips to the eye specialist. One of his eyes had to be removed (glaucoma) so we had a fake eye put in. Lots of kids thought this was kinda cool though. At the same time, he started to lose his hearing. Near the end, he was completely blind, deaf and old but still enjoyed his walks and loved his dog treats. He was fiercely independent and would still insist he knew where he was going. He wasn't an overly affectionate dog but if you started petting his soft furry head or massaged him, he'd swat you if you tried to stop. We saw the vet regularly towards the end and he was amazed at his longevity. We think we owe it to his three plus walks a day, rain or shine. He finally went peacefully in his sleep, at home. He looked like a sleeping angel with his furry little white face resting on the floor. Maybe he was dreaming of running on the beach, scattering all the little white birds.

Milo was a loyal and loving friend,
From Lil’ he could always depend,
On her nurture and care,
And house for which to share.
My fondest memories are quite lucidly clear,
Stepping on his many bombs, I walked in fear,
Nevertheless, he was of the kinder & gentler breed,
For love was his most essential need,
After a difficult beginning strife,
He was adopted into a winning life,
A home with a heart,
A family for which he was a part,
He lived a life that was especially splendid,
He will be sorely missed by his family extended,
Particularly by a couple lovely girls,
Whom Milo knew since they were little pearls,
Now he is in a place where he will be eternally thriven,
A place called that’s called doggy heaven.
