Einstein came to us six years ago, at the age of ten. He was underweight and matted, with long cracked nails long, a mouthful of rotten bleeding teeth and a seriously bad attitude. After good vet care, plenty of nourishing food, and lots of love, this tiny smelly dog blossomed. They say rescued dogs are forever grateful; Einstein simple felt entitled! It was as if he knew the whole household, two adults and another dog, Cisco, revolved around him. He became very loving and happy, He held his head high and his little tail was like a propeller--always up and wagging in a tiny circle. He ran and played, loved the dog park where he made friends with all the other dogs. He was very brave; he never backed down from any human or the biggest dog. He loved everyone, and they loved him back.
One thing he would not tolerate is anyone touching his stuffed blue bone. Although I bought him other toys, this was the only toy he liked and he carried it everywhere. One night he came to the computer room and barked until I followed him to the living room. Cisco was lying on the floor and a few of the hairs from his tail were touching the blue bone. He barked (tattled) until I retrieved the bone for him. He would carry his bone around, trying to find a place to hide it. He was never happy with where he put it, so finally would dig an imaginary hole in the carpet, put his bone in the middle, and cover it with imaginary dirt. Although everyone could see it, to him, it was safely buried. He loved to wear his little shirts and sweaters; when I would go to his clothes box he would jump up and wag his tail as if to say, "What am I going to wear today?" When he was tired of walking, he would ride in a baby carrier that strapped to my chest.
His tongue always hung out of his mouth because all his teeth had to be removed, but he never seemed to mind and he ate anything. The tongue hanging out and his bowlegged stance gave him a certain charm that made everyone laugh. He started failing in April of this year, and in July was diagnosed with kidney failure. He had become disoriented and couldn't eat, so the decision was made to let him go. He had the best vet and staff in the world, and my husband and I were there to hold him when he went to sleep forever. He was cremated, along with his blue bone, because if he were to look down from wherever he is and see Cisco touching his bone, he would really throw a fit! We miss him every day and I would give anything just to hold him one more time.
