My special baby was abandoned at the age of 8 months old. He was tied to a fence with a choke chain around his neck and a rope about 2 feet in length. I found him there alone, hungry and dirty. I took him home with me, gave him a good bath, some food and all the love I have in me. He stayed by my side for 13 years. When I went to work, he came with me. I work with special needs people and they loved him, and he loved them. Sadly, this Tuesday, he collapsed on my front lawn and could not get up. I rushed him to the vet and they found a tumor on his spleen. He was scheduled for surgery the very next day. I was allowed to spend as much time with him as I wanted the night before the surgery. I went home to get his food and when I arrived back at the vet's office with the food, they put him on a blanket in a room with me. He was not interested in eating, so I took him outside in the sunshine and we sat on the grass. That is when he began to breathe heavy and his head dropped. Two minutes later, he died in my arms. The only comfort I have from all of this is knowing that he saw the sun and smelled the grass one last time and my face was the last one he saw. He did not die alone in a cage waiting for surgery. I am selfish enough to admit that I always dreaded having to make that horrible decision of euthenasia when the end came. I always prayed that when his time came, he would pass quietly in his sleep. He was so loyal and unselfish that he made the decision for me, that is why I loved him with all my heart. I will miss him terribly, but am comforted knowing that he is at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for me. He will never be forgotten
