Smudge.... the story of a once in a lifetime companion:

I rescued you from a place you didn’t deserve to be. I first saw you online at the Baypath Humane Society website. Your adoption name was “Princess” & quickly I realized why that name was chosen for you. After a few bumps in the road with potty training at the beginning we quickly bonded. I realized the minute I took you home that we would have a special connection. It was almost fate that I was able to take you home that day in December, right near my birthday. You had just pulled up in the back of a car from being spade. The people at Baypath gave me your leash, I helped you out of the car & we took a 3 foot walk. After that you had me, I was hooked on Princess & had to take you home. The ride home you were quiet, mellow & seemed to enjoyed it. You gave me looks with those big beautiful brown eyes & I melted each time. It was almost a look of reassurance that you knew you’d be well taken care of. Your name ultimately came from the beautiful smudges you had on your face. I named you Smudge but your Grammy wanted you to have an Italian sounding name & that’s when I came up with Smudgearelli. Your first name has always been Leelou which is from the movie “the fifth element”. Your Daddy is kind of a movie buff but you know that because you always sat with me when I watched movies at home.

Through the years we connected on a level most dog owners will never feel. The places we lived, the things we’ve done & the people we’ve met are a true legacy of your life & the life we created together. Living in Spencer, MA was almost like a perfect dream that I never wanted to wake up from. The hiking we did, the animals we met (Like your boyfriend Stanley) & the adventures we had in that area are burned into my mind forever. My life was perfect with you in it, but unfortunately you were ripped from me too soon.

The night of Sunday 12/18, a day after a great weekend of walking/hiking & right after my birthday I noticed you weren’t yourself. Monday morning I woke up to see you feeling a little more like crap. Tuesday was no better so we went to see the vet. They weren’t sure but they thought you might have cancer. We put you on medication to help you but through the week you only got sicker. On Friday morning 12/23 I woke up to see if you were well enough to go potty. You got up & I could tell you were seriously sick. Once I took you to the vet & than the specialist I had to leave you so they could try & fix you. Once I received the call from the specialist my life changed FOREVER. I had to put you to sleep because of a bad tumor that had hurt your neurologic system & you would never be well. I decided to do the hardest thing I have ever done & give you up in order to stop your pain. You looked at me with those droopy brown eyes telling me to let you go & that you’d be ok. You were saying goodbye to your daddy & you will never forget me. At 3:30pm you circumed to the medication & you peacefully drifted away from me forever. The cross I placed around your neck was the one I had hanging in my truck. I always rubbed that if we came across an animal that was deceased. We would often pray for the animals that they be in peace & I ALWAYS prayed for my Smutty! I wanted you to be cremated with that cross on in the hopes that someday you would shine down on me from time to time.

I want you to know Smudge that I miss you so much & my life is growing very difficult the more time I spend without you. I don’t know how I can move on knowing I have to do it without you. I’m in severe pain but I know you are better where you are. I can’t eat or sleep knowing the next minute, the next step, the next breath is without you. My mind & body are fighting each other for the rights of my emotions. I gladly take this severe pain knowing my baby is in a better place. I hope you knew that my entire life was encompassed by you but not because I’m nuts, because I was nuts about you. I will always cherish the 5 1/2 years I had with you & will rescue another special puppy once I’ve been able to grieve the loss of such a wonderful companion. I’m in pain every day, cry & hysterically moan out the nicknames I gave you over the years “Smutty”, “Smutty Mudmans”, “Dadda Girl” along with so many others. I will always remember leaving you I would say “dada be right back, be a good girl dada love you” without fail. I will remember that you were always comfortable knowing your Daddy was here or coming back for you. I remember you always falling asleep next to Daddy when he played his piano or guitar. You seem to just LOVE being next to me & hearing the music.

You were sent to me as a gift & ripped from me too soon. I will cherish the rides we took as I continuously petted your paws. I will severely mourn the loss of you every day of the rest of my life. You deserve that & you deserved to be cherished for 8 more years but that isn’t in the cards for us. Such a precious bond like we had will never ever be replaced. Only vivid memories, bonding moments, long walks & special kisses will remain in my heart. My tears are for the loss of you Smudge, the most amazing animal that touched so many hearts in her short life. Please keep that feeling of you around me as it’s the only thing stopping me from losing what little sanity I have left.
