Elias Dynamo Abijah Sassafras, Eli to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 17 in Freeport IL after a sudden decline.
Eli was born February 19, 2006 in Woodstock IL. He came out and joined the Strauss family in May of 2006 and spent the next 13 years enjoying the fresh country air with room to run and a family that adored him. He loved being an a-typical farm dog.
Eli’s favorite part of the day was his morning walk to see his Papa Ed a half mile away. Once he got there, he was fed a decadent breakfast of left overs, sometimes by hand, ending with at least 3 different types of treats. Eli’s favorite breakfast item was pancakes with both butter and syrup.
Eli defied all the odds. Born with a heart condition, he turned into a fabulous agility dog (24 inch vertical jumps) earning many titles, none of which mattered. He was just happy to be out and about. He further defied his spondylosis diagnosis at age 10 by living a full 3 more years, earning some lovingly bestowed nicknames of Sidewinder and Crazy Legs.
Additionally, Eli broke down doggy stereotypes. Nearly everyone that was lucky enough to meet him came away with a new perspective on standard poodles. Fun fact – the name “poodle” comes from the German “pudel” that translates to “splash in the water.” Poodles originated as German water retrievers!
Eli also enjoyed car rides immensely. His favorite position was head out the sun roof. (Seriously…try it. You’ll never go back to windows again!)
His tricks included the regular stuff, but he could also shut the door after he came in…without being told.
Smart. Loyal. Friendly. Athletic. Handsome…and proud of it.
Eli leaves behind a heartbroken family, a sister from another mister: India Jane, 2 cats that tolerated him, 6 chickens that didn’t care, and a younger poodle sibling named Tyberius who is really beginning to wonder where his big brother went.
Eli was a prince among dog kind – long may he reign in the afterlife.
