Nickname: Smokers, the gate keeper, devil dog.
My kids would kick the soccer ball to each other in the back yard, Smokey was always there watching & waiting for his chance to steal the ball. It was very well calculated on his part. And once he got his chance to steal it, there was no getting it back from him. The kids lost countless soccer balls to him. He would galivant around the yard like a horse with the soccer ball hanging from his mouth. I enjoyed watching him run, I knew he was happy with his "prize".
He had his own baby pool, he absolutely loved the water. He would lay in it as if he were in 7th Heaven.
My husband & Smokey used to "fight" over the yard waste bags. My husband would fill them up with grass clippings then leave them standing next to the tree, only to find them all dumped back on the ground. This went on for quite some time until my husband decided to teach Smokey a lesson. He lifted up the roof to Smokey's dog house and laid the bag full of clippings inside. Thinking he "got" the dog this time he went back into the house. Later on that afternoon, in the yard he found the empty yard waste bag laying by the tree. I don't know how he did it, but Smokey was able to empty the bag and get it out of his house with out tearing it. After that my husband learned to move the bags into the garage until trash day.
Of all the dogs, Smokey was the only one that wanted to play ball with the kids.
He was the gate keeper of the yard. Quick to ward off any school bus that dare pass in front of our house.
He had some nasty habits, but never the less he was a good dog.
I remember holding him in my arms the day we brought him home, trying to comfort him from being taken from his siblings - how ironic it was to be holding him in my arms again trying to comfort him while taking him to the emergency clinic....
I miss my gate keeper.
May I ever be so lucky to meet up with him again.
