Maggie

Age 8, March 18, 2002 - April 15, 2010

Don't worry, we'll only be apart for a little while, Little Moo.

Nickname: Moo, Mooness, Little Moo

We already had a dog and two cats. My mom REALLY didn't want another animal. But we didn't pick Maggie, she picked us. We first met when she was wandering around our front yard. We didn't know who she belonged to, but she certainly wasn't a stray as she was extrememly friendly (though she needed a bath very, very badly). We brought her in our home for a few days, and when no one posted missing dog signs, we posted a 'found dog' sign. It still took her first owners a few more days to claim her, and we were sad to see her leave. About a week later, she was out again. And again, she seemed to always end up on our front steps. When we brought her back to her first owners house, they said she kept getting out even though they tried many things to prevent her from leaving. She also was very jumpy on their two year old son. I guess then we all decided she should come with us. When we brought her in to her forever home, and took her to the vets for a check up, it turns out she had a few more health problems that this previous family failed to mention. It didn't matter. She was part of the family now and we took care of her. The funny thing is, if her old owners said she was an "escape artist", then why didn't she ever try and leave us?

Her first gift to our family was to help coax our older cat out of her shy-ness. Even though Shadow didn't want anything to do with Maggie, Maggie was absolutely determined to make a new friend and tell Shadow that she loved her lots and lots.

Maggie was the opposite of our German Shepard mix, Caramel when it came to vistors. While Caramel's barks would indicate a warning, Maggie would be right at the door, wagging her tail as if to say, "Welcome to our home! I want to be your friend!".

Maggie loved loved loved attention, and tended to get whinny if someone wasn't continuously scratching her tummy, and she was jut so darn cute, that it was impossible to say no. And she was a smart dog when it came to being pet. Whenever anyone was in the bathroom, and happened to leave the door open, Maggie took advantage of the fact that you had no excuse at all not to pet her :-) At night, she'd often jump on my bed, crawl under the covers and rest her head on my pillow. Many times, we'd even be nose to nose, so close that our noses were touching. Then she'd turn over and I'd hold her in my arms. She'd fit perfectly in the "C" shape I'd make while lying on my side.

Maggie was a dog who didn't shed, so every month, she'd have to get a hair cut, because every dog needs to look pretty, of course. She'd look absolutely adorable with the little bow in her hair when she came back from the groomers. My mom would often joke that she pays more for the dog's hair cut than her own (which was very true).

Many times a year, I would take my two dogs to a GIANT dog park with forests and lakes and plenty of room to run. Once, I got seperated from them. After looking a long time around the many trees, I gave up and went back to the main path. And there they were: Caramel was pacing and definetely very nervous about where I was. Maggie, however, was just sitting there, calming looking around, as if she knew I'd come back, because she knows I love her and I know she loves me.

I'd get the mail, be gone for only three minutes, and the second I'd get back, she'd be jumping all over me, and licking me, as if to say, "I missed you SO much, and I'm SO glad to see you!"

If she could talk, the only words coming from her mouth would be of love and happiness. And that's exactly what she brought to us. She had the gift to make everyone happy, no matter how bad their day was.

And for such a little dog, her heart was the biggest of any dog I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I 'm an only child, so she was my company, my blanket, and my sister.
