Pooch was a sweet dog who came into my family's life when I was young.

Pooch was the first dog I ever had. Actually she was my family's dog. She came to us as a stray and stayed for a few years. Since my folks weren't "dog people", Pooch was an outdoor dog. I think that was actually OK with her because she loved being outside. We lived out in the country, then. Regardless of the season, Pooch would stay up late, sniffing the wind and answering distant barks with her own. After a while my dad would holler out the window in the meanest voice he could muster, "Pooch!" and that would quiet her down for some time. It wasn't long, however, before she couldn't contain herself and a muffled "woof" would escape. Soon she's be back to barking as before.

Being quite young at the time I don't have a lot of memories of Pooch, but I do remember running around our yard with her. She was a great stick fetcher and loved to play chase.

Every once in a while she'd get on the scent of a mole and would dig for as long as it took to get that mole. Once she had it, she would carry the poor mole-carcass around as a trophy dropping it occasionally to roll on the poor thing. She was so proud.

Pooch was always getting loose and running off. Finally, one day she and the neighbor dog, Lady, got loose at the same time and ran off together. We spent a week looking through all the nearby woods to find her, but never did. I hope she found another home with some other people that loved her.

The photo is of me and Pooch. Sorry it's so grainy. Being a kid, the only camera I had at the time was really basic camera that took 126 film cartridges.
